RV season is here, and the first camping weekend of the year is just around the corner! Before you hit the road, taking a few minutes to inspect your RV can help you avoid costly repairs, unexpected breakdowns, and safety issues during your trip.
After months in storage, your RV needs a proper seasonal checkup to make sure everything is working the way it should. Before your next adventure, check these 5 important things!
1. Dewinterize the Water System
One of the most important steps before using your RV is getting the water system ready for the season.
Start by flushing the system thoroughly to remove any remaining antifreeze. Make sure the water heater is no longer bypassed, sanitize the fresh water tanks, and inspect all plumbing connections for leaks. Turn on faucets and showers to ensure water is flowing properly throughout the RV.
A properly dewinterized system helps prevent water damage and keeps your water safe and clean for camping season.
2. Inspect Safety Systems
Safety should always come first before any trip.
Check all propane connections for possible leaks and confirm your propane appliances are functioning correctly. Check that your smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.
Also, inspect your fire extinguisher to make sure it is fully charged and easily accessible in case of an emergency.
3. Check Tire Pressure & Condition
Your RV tires may have been sitting unused for months, so a careful inspection is essential before hitting the road.
Look for cracks, bulges, dry rot, or uneven wear on all tires. Check the tire pressure while the tires are cold and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI.
Don’t forget to inspect your spare tire as well. Properly maintained tires improve safety, fuel efficiency, and overall driving performance.
4. Charge the Batteries
A weak battery can quickly ruin the start of a camping trip.
Fully charge both your house batteries and chassis battery before using your RV. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary.
Healthy batteries help ensure reliable starts and smooth operation for your RV systems and appliances.
5. Examine Seals for Leaks
Water damage is one of the most common and expensive RV repairs, which is why checking seals is so important.
Inspect all exterior seals around windows, doors, roof edges, vents, and storage compartments. Look for cracks, gaps, peeling sealant, or any signs of moisture or water damage.
If you notice damaged areas, resealing them early can help prevent major problems later in the season.
